Anthony "AJ" FAY, 38, of Scottsville, NY, passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2026, in Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born August 12, 1987, in Wellsville, he was the son of Edward Fay and Betty Dixon Fay of Wellsville.
AJ is survived by his loving wife Lynne; his three beloved children, Anthony Jr. (7), Michael (5), and Julianna (3); his father, Ed; his life-long friend, Damon Arnold; his godson, Devin Arnold; and his siblings, David Boyle, Tracy Fay, Shanna Makin, Melisa (David) Heary, and Kelly (Jehahiah) Miller; and many other family members. He was predeceased by his mother, Betty Fay; and a sister, Trina Fay.
AJ grew up playing outdoors with many neighborhood friends, spending time with his family, and playing baseball, a sport that seemed to come effortlessly to him. What began in Little League continued with excelling in baseball at Wellsville High School, where he graduated in 2005, winning each game in playoffs before securing a sectional title with his team and friends. AJ continued his baseball career at Jamestown Community College as a pitcher and designated hitter while studying math/science. During his college years, he traveled overseas playing for the USA Athletes International baseball league and played in the NYCBL for the Nitros, among other baseball leagues.
In 2007, after graduating from JCC, he continued playing baseball at NJIT while majoring in chemistry. Unfortunately, after suffering a shoulder injury, he hung up his baseball cleats professionally and graduated from NJIT in 2009. He then completed his educational degree of criminal justice and chemistry at SUNY Fredonia, graduating in 2010. He also enjoyed playing football, watching the Buffalo Bills, hanging out with friends, adding to his collection of red vehicles in his yard, riding his motorcycle, going to concerts, and enjoying life.
AJ started his pipeline career as a laborer during college with the Laborer's Union of Rochester. After that, he joined the Pipeliners Local Union 798 as a journeyman in 2013. There, he worked countless jobs throughout the Northeast and Southern regions of the US, usually working as long and as hard as he could. After his second son was born in 2020, wanting to travel less and be at home more, he secured a job at Buckeye Partners in Rochester, where he worked as a pipeliner until his death.
Outside of work, there was family. In 2017, 10 years after their first date, AJ married Lynne Woodard of Westfield, NY. AJ, being the hardworking, determined, and dedicated person he was, made a life for his family that was secure, fun, and loving. He mapped out his unknown future to be prepared for anything, with the intent of providing the best for his family that he possibly could. He was the ultimate provider and protector. He was smart, confident, self-assured, personable to whoever he met, sociable, and easygoing. But his best qualities were brought to life with the birth of his children, Anthony Jr., Michael, and Julianna. He loved his kids with all his heart and he showed it every day. He showered them with special treats, random gifts, and memorable experiences. His favorite memories and bucket-list items he checked off were taking them to their first New York Yankees baseball game, a Buffalo Bills scrimmage, Rochester Red Wings games, a Monster Jam show, Myrtle Beach trips, Great Wolf Lodge visits, Dave & Buster's adventures, and movie theater outings.
AJ brought his determined spirit into his fight with cancer. He wanted to and did try anything and everything. There was no telling him no and he never gave up, despite the incredibly difficult toll on his body. For AJ, it was "go big or go home" and he came swinging with everything he had.
Friends may call at Olney-Foust & Embser Funeral Homes & Cremation, 34 West State Street, Wellsville NY on Friday, June 12, 2026 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM and on Saturday, June 13, 2026 from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM, with a memorial service celebrating AJ's life following at 1:00 PM.
