Obituary

Barbara V. SAVINS, 76, of Wellsville, NY, died Tuesday, June 2, 2026, in Wellsville. Born November 17, 1949, in Bethesda, MD, she was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Butts Vaklyes. 

A 1967 graduate of Wellsville High School, she earned a degree in art history from SUNY Cortland. Barbara met her husband Robert “Bob” Savins while they were attending SUNY Cortland. They married on April 16, 1972, in Elmira, and shared 54 years together. Barbara became a proud Navy wife and for 21 years she traveled with Bob to many places including Iceland, England, Scotland, Germany, Amsterdam, Haiti, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Virginia Beach, and Charleston, SC. While in South Carolina, she earned an associate’s degree in engineering technology as well as her industrial drafting diploma at Trident Technical College, where she later became a drafting instructor. While living in Iceland, Barbara earned her master’s degree in teaching from Webster University, St. Louis. 

Barbara and her husband returned to Wellsville in 1992 where she pursued her many talents. She became a counselor with the Adult Education Services at Alfred State College. She later became a math and drafting instructor at the ASC Wellsville. Barbara was an active member of Schoolhouse Quilters, Genesee Valley Chorus, and Allegany County Art Association. She was a longtime volunteer with the American Red Cross. Barbara also served as a station chairman while in Keflavik, Iceland and Oceana, VA. Barbara loved her cats, was an avid reader, enthusiastic gardener, amateur bird watcher, and an amazing quilter. She loved to cook, bake, and have her afternoon tea with friends. 

Surviving besides her husband, Bob, are: two brothers, John (Caryl) Vaklyes and David (Marie) Vaklyes; several cousins; nieces and nephews, including Elizabeth (Keith) Rotenberry, Samantha (Francisco Pineda) Vaklyes, Kenneth (Sharon) Rozansky, Erin Vaklyes, and Ryan English. She was predeceased by her parents; a sister-in-law, Iris Rozansky; and twin brothers-in-law, Joel Savins and Harvey Savins. 

A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM, Monday, June 8, 2026 in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Wellsville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to SPCA serving Allegany County.
