Carol A. ERWIN

Carol A. ERWIN, 89, of Wellsville, NY, died Wednesday, September 27, 2023 in Wellsville Manor Care Center.  

Born May 9, 1934, in Wellsville, she was the daughter of Paul Wheeler and Margaret Hull Stevens.  She was a 1952 graduate of Wellsville High School.  A frustrated actress, she appeared in all the school plays and a few put on by community groups.  Carol started her working career at 16 years old at Bell Telephone as a switchboard operator and transitioned to the business office when phones went to dial.  She then worked at Worthington for many years, Cuba Memorial Hospital, and retired from Reynolds & Reynolds in Tampa, FL.  Carol returned to Wellsville to spend time with family and enjoy her grandkids.  In her early days, she was a member of Genesee #5 Volunteer Firemen’s Auxiliary and bowled in a local league.  Carol enjoyed reading, knitting, crocheting, crafting, and was a member of Jones Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Evergreen Twig.  

Surviving are: three children, James P. (Tonia) Erwin of Cuba, Stephanie A. Stein and Roxanne P. Williams, both of Wellsville; nine grandchildren who affectionately knew her as GG, Jennifer (James) Tillotson, Caryn Hand, Erik (Missy) Stein, William (Wendy) Williams, Lori (Trever) Levitt, Steven Williams, Trenton Erwin, Hannah Erwin, and Ethan Erwin; 17 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Alice Stevens of Wellsville; and two nephews, Paul (Karen) Stevens of Arkport and Kal Brown of New York City.  In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Paul W. Stevens, Jr.; a sister, Patricia Louise Brown; a son-in-law, James R. Stein; and two nephews, Matt Brown and Steve Brown. 

Per Carol’s wishes, there will be no viewing.  Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Olean. 

Memorials may be made to David A. Howe Library or SPCA serving Allegany County.
