Hugh R. LANGELIER, 77, of Hornell, NY, formerly of Malone, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2025 in Dansville.
Born November 20, 1947, in Malone, Hugh was raised in the close-knit community of Moira. He was the eldest son of Norman and Margaret Sullivan Langelier. A 1966 graduate of Brushton-Moira Central School, he earned a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education/Social Studies from SUNY Plattsburgh in 1971. He later earned a master’s degree in Educational Administration from St. Lawrence University as well as his NYS School District Administrator certification.
Hugh dedicated his professional life to education. Over the course of his career, he served in various roles throughout both Northern NY and the Southern Tier, including as a social studies teacher, principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent of schools. He retired as Assistant Superintendent for Instruction from Steuben-Allegany BOCES in 2004, well-respected for his administrative leadership. An athlete in his younger years, Hugh played basketball in both high school and college. He later channeled that passion into coaching his daughters’ youth soccer, basketball, and softball teams, where his gentle encouragement and patience fostered players’ self-confidence and love of the game.
Hugh had a deep appreciation for music – especially country – and was often the first on the dance floor or karaoke machine. He was known for his unmistakable joy in dancing and singing and his general love of a good time. A true “gadget” enthusiast, Hugh had a keen interest in computers and almost anything technological. He loved the outdoors, particularly the Adirondacks, and enjoyed spending time outside in all seasons.
While Hugh will be remembered warmly for his sense of humor and the infectious energy of his youth, he will be cherished most for his loyal friendships, quiet acts of kindness, and willingness to always be there to help. He was a genuinely caring man who adored his children and grandchildren. His daughters could not have been raised by a more devoted and supportive dad. Hugh’s love and pride for his family were unwavering, and his greatest joy came from the time they shared together.
Hugh is survived by his two daughters, Meghann Langelier of Malone and Caitlin Arnold (Zachary) of Geneseo; his beloved grandchildren, Ava Langelier of Malone, and Gabriel Arnold, Eden Arnold, Jesse Arnold, Asher Arnold, and Josephine Arnold, all of Geneseo; his former spouse, Alice Langelier of Malone; and his three brothers, Neil Langelier (Kay) of Moira, Ernie Langelier (Katie) of Grand Junction, CO, and Phil Langelier (Donna Krause) of Honeoye. He was predeceased by his parents.
Memorials may be made in Hugh’s memory to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, P.O. Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD 21741 or online at www.give.michaeljfox.org.
The family will hold a celebration of Hugh’s life on a later date.
