James H. Stevens

James H. Stevens, 86, of Wellsville, died Tuesday, June 10, 2025, in his home with his family by his side. He was born December 7, 1938, in Wellsville, the son of the late Charles Humphrey and Virginia (Barnes) Stevens. On September 12, 1959, in Wellsville, he married Nancy M. McCracken, who survives.

Jim was raised in Wellsville and was a 1956 graduate of Wellsville High School. He continued his education, attending Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, PA, and he earned his associate’s degree in applied sciences from Alfred State College in 1969. He entered the work force with the Wellsville Daily Reporter before he began his career with Iroquois Gas, before it was acquired by National Fuel, he retired in 1994 as the Office Administrator for both the Wellsville and Hornell National Fuel offices. He was a member of: the Wellsville Rotary Club, where he was a past president and served as treasurer for 36 years, he was the recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow twice; Arc Allegany-Steuben Board of Directors for over 25 years, serving as both president and treasurer during his tenure; he was a 63 year member of the Genesee Hose Company #5, serving as Captain and President; the United Way Board of Directors; and the Town of Wellsville Planning Board.

In addition to his wife of 65 years, Nancy Stevens, he is survived by: two daughters, Amy (Ros) Gowdy of Belmont and Janice (Greg Ashworth) Stevens of Wellsville; a daughter-in-law, Wendy Talbett Stevens; five grandsons, Dan (Crystal) Stevens, Sean Stevens, Jim (Lindsey) Stevens, Tom (Jessica) Stevens, and Josh (Kristen) Monday; a granddaughter, Diana (Matt Corneilus) Gowdy; two great-grandsons, Blaine & Owen Stevens; a sister, Barbara (Thomas) Vossler of Gettysburg, PA; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by, two sons, Jay Stevens in 2012 and James Stevens in 2022; and a grandson Mikey Monday in 1991.

A private graveside service in Woodlawn Cemetery is being planned for a later date.
