PORT ALLEGANY- Mary K. Ostrander, 80, of Route 155N, passed away Sunday (Oct. 13, 2024) in the Lakeview Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center, Smethport.

Born May 23, 1944, in Kane, PA, she was a daughter of Joseph C. and Clara Gregory Niklas.  On Sept. 3, 1965, in Kane, PA, she married Howard F. Ostrander, who died July 3, 2004.

Mary was a graduate of Kane High School, class of 1962. She also graduated from Alfred State College, class of 1980, with a degree in Nursing.

She was employed with the former Port Allegany Community Hospital for 16 years and later with Lakeview Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center, Smethport, before retiring.

Mary was a member of St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church of Port Allegany.

Surviving is a daughter, Sybil A. Taylor of Roulette; two sons, Peter J. Ostrander of Port Allegany , William H. Ostrander of Seattle, WA; a granddaughter, Hannah Ostrander; one brother, Peter Niklas; one sister, Theresa (Robert) Gustafson of Kane; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Howard, six brothers, Martin, Joseph, Gerald, Leo, John, and Joseph  Niklas, II; and three sisters, Delores Johnson, Anna Jane Anderson, and Dorothy Thiry.

Friends are invited to attend a memorial service at 10 a.m. Friday (Oct. 25, 2024) in St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church, Port Allegany, with Rev. Joseph Dougherty, as celebrant. Burial will in St. Gabriel’s Cemetery, Port Allegany.

Memorials can be made to the S.W. Smith Library, Port Allegany.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany.
