Michael Timothy BALDWIN, "aka" Michael T., wrote his last story on Friday, September 5, 2025, as he closed the book on an illustrious career as WJQZ Radio Station Owner and On-Air Radio Personality, Wellsville Ambulance Corps Captain, EMT/Paramedic, Allegany County Emergency Crisis Manager, Wellsville Town Supervisor and the Owner/Editor of Wellsville Regional News Network. He was always such an overachiever...
Michael was born to William "Mike" Baldwin and Patricia Ann Ludden Baldwin on February 13, 1962, a birthday shared with his maternal grandmother. Since his father's birthday was February 17th, Michael was often the subject of many family holiday dinners, "you couldn't wait four more days?"
Michael began his career early on as the neighborhood paperboy. Not one to do a job halfway, he faithfully practiced the "perfect newspaper toss" until he could avoid delivering a wet, muddy, irretrievable paper. He became known as "The Weatherman" during his high school years when meteorology piqued his interest. It was a hobby he would pursue throughout his life often being a source for weather events for the Buffalo National Weather Service.
Following graduation from Wellsville High School, Michael attended Alfred State Agricultural and Technology College with a degree path in Chemical Technology. He transferred to Houghton College to pursue a pre-med curriculum and graduated from Alfred University with a degree in Political Science. Again, that overachiever syndrome was his guiding light or maybe just his flashlight.
Michael T's professional career began when he successfully brought the first FM format radio station, WJQZ, to Wellsville. It was the highlight of his radio career and his proudest professional accomplishment.
Transitioning from the radio station, he was appointed the Regional Coordinator for the Western Regional Emergency Medical System along with working as the Allegany County Bioterror Preparedness Coordinator. He was the Wellsville Town Supervisor and a Communications Technician for the Wellsville Police Department serving in those positions for seven and six years respectively, during the later 1990's and early 2000's. He followed that with a stint as the Executive Director of Allegany Area Economic Development Corporation.
In late 2006, Michael T. relocated to the Hudson Valley area and reacquainted himself with the radio industry. He completely enjoyed that area with its proximity to New York City and took advantage of the multicultural food offerings along with the museums, parks, shopping, etc. Michael T. returned to Wellsville in 2011 due to family obligations and rejoined local radio stations with Colonial Media and Entertainment as an on-air radio personality. In 2014, he became an Independent News Coordinator servicing radio stations in NY, PA and SC, winning the PA Broadcasters Association Outstanding Local Newscast Award. It was during this period he started Wellsville Regional News Network Blog which he owned and operated until his recent health problems prevented him from continuing. He provided this service free of charge and as gift to the community.
Community service was of extreme importance to Michael T. He believed in giving back to the people who had helped him accomplish his dreams. To this effort, he was a 23- year Wellsville Volunteer Ambulance Corps member, 15 as the Chief Administrative Officer. He also was a former member of the Board of Education, Village of Wellsville Zoning Board of Appeals, ALERT (aka SWAT) team, the Village/Town Zoning Appeals Master Plan Committee, and City status committee. His most fulfilling volunteer work was helping at the Hart Comfort House. He believed in providing as much comfort to people as possible when their time has come.
Surviving are: three sisters, Kim Baldwin of Wellsville, Holly Ballance and Michele Shepherd, both of Montgomery Village, MD. He was predeceased by his parents.
