Norman E. Tanner, Sr.

ELDRED- Norman E. Tanner, Sr., passed away Wednesday (Oct. 9, 2024) in his home, with family by his side.

Born July 17, 1941, in Kane, PA, he was a son of John F. and Neva E. Kemp Tanner.  On Nov. 12, 1960, he married Barbara A. Ludwig, who died July 10, 2017. They were married 56 years.

Norman was a resident of the area and a graduate of Smethport Area High School, class of 1960. He also graduated from the Missouri Auctioneer School.

He was a self-employed dairy farmer and was employed with Zippo Manufacturing Co., Bradford, and later with Ball-Incon Packaging Co., retired after 24 years of service.

Norman was an avid hunter and loved to garden, but most of all, he enjoyed his family.

Surviving are three daughters, Cindy A. (Martin) Austin, Sr. and Sandra K. (Frank) Mason both of Eldred, Amanda C. (Dave) Skroback of Portville, NY; three sons, Norman E. (Marsha) Tanner, Jr., of Eldred, Randy A. (Denise) Tanner of Rew, PA, William D. (Dianne) Tanner of New Castle, PA; 8 grandchildren: Barbara Austin, Martin Austin, Jr., Elizabeth Austin, Tawni Mason, Michael Tanner, Kaityln Seaux, David Skroback, Jr., and Emma Skroback; and 7 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Barbara, 8 brothers: Chet., Roy, John, Sylvester, Stephen, Carl, Nelson, and Ward Tanner; and a sister, Maribelle Dunn; and son-in-law, Martin Austin, Sr.

Friends will be received from 6-8 p.m. Friday in the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 12, 2024) with Rev. Max Simms, pastor of the Hilltop Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Port Allegany.

Memorials can be made to the McKean County 4H or the Otto Eldred Future Farmers of America.
