Obituary

Ronald G. ABRAHAM, 70, of Belfast, NY, passed away unexpectedly on April 18, 2026, at his home.

Born August 23 ,1955, in Walworth, NY, Ron was the first son, and second of five children, born to Gerald (Jerry) and June Abraham. He grew up on the family farm, graduated from Wayne Central School, and later attended SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, NY. After graduating college, he spent time working in Idaho for the Federal Government in the Department of Forestry. Ultimately, he spent the majority of his career with the NYS DEC where he was a NYS forester until his retirement in 2019. He loved his job and made many lifelong friends along the way. It was here that he also met his wife, Mary. They married on June 29, 1996, in Belfast, NY. At the same time, he also took on the role of stepfather to his daughter, Jessie.

Ron loved spending time with his family and friends. He particularly looked forward to holiday picnics and the annual barn party held on his parents’ farm. He also loved the outdoors, spending countless hours hiking and biking trails across the U.S, working tirelessly to maintain the Genessee Valley Greenway trail system, and spending time at the hunting cabin in Wellsville, NY with his family and friends. He even traveled many times out west to fight wildfires. He had a deep interest in trains, genealogy, and local history. He was an expert crossword puzzle solver and had every answer ready when it was time for Jeopardy or trivia at The Palmer Opera House. However, one of his greatest passions was restoring John Deere tractors with his father, brothers, brother-in-law, and friends. They spent hours upon hours getting tractors ready to show at the annual Two Cylinder Expo. Along with these interests, he was also an avid member of the Angelica Lions Club; the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier Two Cylinder Clubs, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, the Friends of the Genesee Valley Greenway, and IMPACT: Friends Improving Allegany County Trails — he looked forward to all the activities and events that these groups held. Ron was a gentle soul with a compassionate heart and an incredible mind. He will be deeply missed by all.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 30 years, Mary, of Belfast, NY; daughter, Jessie (Michelle) Thompson-Libertone of Wellsville, NY; two grandchildren, Mark Libertone III and Elinor Cook; siblings, Eileen Albright of Plano, TX, Mary Ann (Mark) Kritall of Walworth, NY, Alan (Michelle) Abraham of Webster, NY, and Carl (Lanette) Abraham of Kansas City, MO; an uncle, George Crane of California, PA; five nieces, six nephews, five great-nieces, and six great-nephews; many cousins; and his adored dogs, Seamus, Opie, and Emmy Lou. He was predeceased by his parents, Jerry and June Abraham, along with many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

The family will hold a Celebration of Life for Ron on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at the Angelica Conservation Club in Angelica, NY. Details will be forthcoming.
